Well I recently had the pleasure of meeting a matte artist who works at Industrial Light + Magic, and he offered a few tips on what is needed to make 3D look realistic. :)

One thing of obvious mention is the ambient occlusion render pass (where basically, there's shading around every bit of detail). I was sort of familiar with that, but I never really tried to employ it in any 3D shots of mine.

So, I made this picture as a bit of a test-bed for this. I've just discovered a more efficient method of generating occlusion passes now, so I'll be looking into adding these into my production pipeline. :)

The spacedock is delicious, but I can see flat edges of the Earth.

But other than that it is real.

Wow, amazing job. Looks like it is right out of chapter 17 of my fan fic, which I am writing chapter 17 of right now.

You all make me sick! Not recognizing Spacedock from Star Trek (specifically "The Search for Spock). Except for Sacred-Light of course. I've always loved that part of any ST movie more, don't know why.

the station is really fascinating, but a little more detail on the planet would make this piece awesome!

Wow!!!! :eyepopping: That's one very nice model of a starbase. The details it has. The planet makes the piece even more complete. This is why I love Star Trek and people who take time to make such nice 3D models.

I'm gonna :+fav: this and I'm gona keep an eye on you, wouldn't want to miss another one of these beauties. :+devwatch:
